Everyday, we deal with patients who r in need of Endodontic Dental care & treatment.
Endodontic treatment requires knowledge of "Endodontology".
What does it actually mean to “Know” things?
It is often believed that Dental & Medical knowledge is simply scientific knowledge.
Science is concerned with how things are constructed & how they function.
Although ,we need to know about tooth anatomy & How to produce good root canal preparations.
But as Practicing Dentists ,We also need to have other types of knowledge.
such as to develop good judgment, to make the ‘right’ clinical decisions.
Dental practitioner needs at least three different forms of knowledge.
Theoretical - Scientific Knowledge
There is a major body of Scientific knowledge within endodontology.
e.g. Pulp biology , root canal micro biota , root filling materials & clinical outcomes of endodontic therapy.
The opposite is doxa. which refers to ‘ belief ’ or ‘opinion’.
Science produces ‘facts’. The results of science are presented in lectures, articles & textbooks.
The concept of ‘truth’ & the growth of knowledge in natural science is not unproblematic .
It must be understood that Modern science is an industry & is affected by many factors both internal and external .
‘Knowing How’ -Technique
is practical in nature & concerns skills & the performance of certain actions.
This concept of knowledge implies not only the ability to do things , but also to understand what you are doing .
To say that you have practical knowledge , It is not enough to produce things out of mere routine or habit .
You have to know , what you are doing & be able to argue about it. Practice must be combined with reflection.
There is a tacit or silent dimension of knowledge . We know more than we can tell .
Knowledge is very often transmitted by the act of doing.
Practical wisdom is the ability to think about practical matters .
The clinical situation demands that the dentist exercises practical wisdom “ to do the right thing at the right moment .”
Practical wisdom is concerned with why we might decide to act in one way rather than another .
When thinking about the right action or making the right decision , we enter the territory of moral philosophy.
Morality is concerned with human actions & there are certain principles that can separate ‘right’ from ‘Wrong’ decisions.
So Endodontology encompasses not only theoretical thinking but also the practical skills of a craftsman & the practical thinking needed for clinical & moral judgment.
